China Alive 2009 - Important Dates and Trip Information
Monday, Aug 31 – Trip Assignments will be announced. No change in trip assignments after this date will be possible.
Tuesday, Sep 1 – Students may begin making payments for trips to Veronica, SAS cashier, located on the left side of the Pudong reception office.
Students should go to their assigned trip leader for a “payment envelope” once trips announced.
Payment WITHOUT this envelope will not be accepted by Veronica.
Tuesday, Sep 1 – China Alive Meeting #1: Specific trip information will be distributed and discussed. (The times and locations of the meeting will be announced by each trip leader.)
Monday, Sep 7 – All payments for trips are due to Veronica, SAS cashier, no later than 3pm.
Money is NOT refundable once payment made.
Thursday, Sep 10 – China Alive Meeting #2: Final discussion on all trips. (The times and locations of the meeting will be announced by each trip leader.)
Sunday-Monday, Sep 20-21 – Trips depart.
Friday, Sep 25 – All trips scheduled to return to Shanghai.
Friday, Sep 25 – Grade 9 and 10 China Alive students are not expected to attend school. Students in Grades 11 and 12 DO attend school and take part in regular classes and some special activities designed for them.
Trip Descriptions and Information
There are trips on offer to accommodate a wide variety of family and personal preferences. Trip assignments will be made on a first-come, first-served basis with priority given to grade 10 students. Each trip has a trip leader who is focused on organizing the details of that trip, as well as a curricular leader. We will be using a ratio of about 1 teacher to 10 students. Most trips will have a qualified nurse accompanying them (the nurse is not figured into the student-teacher ratio). (If you are a licensed nurse and would like to take part, please call our school nurse Suzanne Wees at 6221-1445 ext. 3359)
The prices here are approximations and are only given here to serve as a guide to price. Trips fees will be calculated precisely once trip rosters and exact numbers are set.
1. Green Adventures Shanghai Trip
Green Adventures Shanghai is a lower-cost course for those students wanting to combine fun outdoor adventures with learning about green, environmentally friendly growth in Shanghai. The first three days of the course will include adventures such as rock climbing, go-karting, mountain biking, and a high ropes course with developing team building and leadership skills. We will also learn organic farming techniques and Shanghai’s future plans for green urban development. Then for the last two days we will travel by high-speed train to Moganshan, where we will spend one night in a Shangri-La like resort and hike, mountain bike, and learn first-hand how green technology works at our resort. We will also build a small garden with a compost for community service.

2. Hainan Sanya
This trip is an active adventure that combines introductory surfing, rainforest trekking, high ropes course, Sea kayaking / turtle viewing, and a couple of nights of beach camping. The setting is the Southern city of Sanya on the beautiful island of Hainan.

3. Lijiang Traditions
This is one of the most popular options within the China Alive program. During five days, we will explore culturally diverse Yunnan province. We will learn about Naxi minority culture while visiting the ancient town of Lijiang, with its picturesque and traditional architecture and its beautiful streets filled with handicrafts shops. The Jade Dragon Snow Capped Mountain’s landscape is breathtaking and dramatic. On our way to Shangri-la, a fabled town with impressive Tibetan temples, we will stroll along the edges of the legendary Tiger Leaping Gorge on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. At Shangri-La we will visit an orphanage, a Tibetan monastery, have time to ride horses and practice archery and at the end of the day relax in a hot spring resort. This trip will put students in close contact with the thousands-year-old traditions and cultures of our host country, China. Plus, you will have time for shopping!
4. Outdoor Adventures in Yangshuo
This trip is a medium level activity outdoor adventure trip that includes a mix of experiences including biking, climbing, rock climbing and much more. We will combine hiking through beautiful rice terraces in conjunction with team building activities. We will swim in cool streams and visit rural villages. The picturesque scenes of limestone outcrops will be in the background as we explore a very famous and exciting area of China.

5. Shandong - Confucian Odyssey Trip
Our trip to Shandong will bring us to one of the cradles of Chinese civilization, Qufu, birthplace of Confucius. While biking through one of the most beautiful parks of the region, we will learn about the life and works of this sage man. In climbing Tai Mountain, we will experience the same sacred thrill many emperors of old dynasties felt in bringing to its summit their prayers and respects. And what a better way of ending our trip that spending our last night at the best hot spring resorts of China!

6. Sichuan Panda-monium Trip
This trip combines a spicy Sichuan cultural adventure with excursions west of Chengdu. After an evening of hot pot and Sichuan Opera we leave Chengdu for the Hailuo Valley to learn about the local community and geography through a cultural exchange with children from a local school, and an all-day hike in the world-famous glacier park. From Hailuo we travel to Ya’an, where we will visit the famous Panda Refuge, and hear stories of how pandas were rescued during the 2008 earthquake. Back in Chengdu, we will relax at Jinli Street, a shopping and snack area built in Qing Dynasty-style architecture. We end our Sichuan adventure as volunteers at the Chengdu Panda Research Center. We’ll help the keepers in daily tasks taking care of the pandas -- a unique opportunity to gain a close-up perspective of these amazing animals!

7. Western Guizhou Adventure
This is an adventurous trip through an area of Western Guizhou which has seen few tourists to date. The trip will include a visit to Huangguoshu waterfalls, hiking through stunning scenery, visits to minority villages and exciting rafting (expected Level 2). This is a special trip for those students who are reasonably fit and want to get away from the tourist trail. Physical activity level: Moderate with some hiking involved

8. Wild Guizhou Trip
Do you want an adventure in Southeastern China? Guizhou province is one of the most wild, geographically diverse and least explored parts of China. We will hike mountain trails and river valleys, explore hot springs and camp out in tents. We will base our trip out of Xijiang, a Miao village in a remote part of Guizhou. We will meet families from the village and explore the concept of eco-tourism as you learn about the impact tourism has on this unspoiled wilderness. You will make great friends, get your boots dirty, go fishing for your own dinner and learn to sleep under the stars!

9. Yunnan Explorer Trip
The Yunnan Explorer Trip is for the student who seeks diverse physical and cultural challenges. This trip incorporates artistic, cultural, physical, vocational and recreational experiences. It includes multiple modes of transportation that challenge personal perspectives and help develop a greater understanding of the beauty and opportunities available in China’s Yunnan Province.
Specific experiences on this trip include an architectural tour, tie dying workshop with local crafts people, painting on location in the mountains, a local college visit, traditional musical performance and participation, and a three-course tea ceremony. Transportation experiences include an overnight train, boat, cable car, horse, and bike ride in addition to some hiking. Students will pick and eat oranges at a local orchard and as participate at a fishing village. Yunnan Explorers will have an opportunity to relax in hot springs and breathe fresh air in the highlands overlooking panoramic views. This trip includes Chinese Kung Fu training and visits to ancient Markets and the largest Buddhist temple on Jizhu Mountain!
This is a moderate level trip with a three-hour hike and a one and a half hour bike ride being the most strenuous activities.

10. Zhongdian Wilderness Backpacking Trip
This is truly a trip of a lifetime! Of the six days that we are away, four will be spent hiking through remote countryside, accessible to only the most adventurous travelers. We will visit a local school, have a bonfire party, visit a beautiful waterfall, and on Day 4 when we reach the Dejiu pasture, our ascent will be rewarded with a star studded night sky extending from one horizon to the other. The trip begins and ends with a dip in local hot springs and there will be some time to explore the ancient town of Zhongdian.
This trip requires students to be physically fit and capable of hiking in mountainous areas 8-10KM a day. We will be camping, so students should be aware that there will not be shower facilities for some of the days. Students who have had problems with altitude sickness or have respiratory or cardiac difficulties may not sign up for this trip.
